Job Description

The UX/UI Designer deeply understands the audiences they design for and prioritizes the experience of users in everything they do to create highly effective and best-in-class digital creative, from landing pages and social media graphics to entire digital design systems.

The right candidate will be a strong visual designer with experience working for a brand and have a track record of making data and research-driven decisions in designs that show they aren’t afraid to break new ground within the parameters of well-established brands and brand standards.

With direction from the senior director of digital creative, this individual works independently within established deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Salary Range

$66,000 – $75,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

Designs high quality, brand-aligned visual creative for ASU, with a focus on its digital channels..
Create high fidelity mock-ups and prototypes, user flows and wireframes to transform complex tasks into best in class, intuitive, accessible digital and well designed experiences using Adobe XD and Creative Cloud Libraries.
Engages in creative ideation for how to tell ASU’s best stories on social media platforms.
Create dynamic, “thumb-stopping,” graphics that appeal to the university’s diverse audiences for ASU’s flagship brand social media accounts.
Manages the UI kit for using Adobe XD, Adobe Creative Cloud and zeroheight.
Prepares sketches, illustrations and artwork involving freehand drawing and lettering for digital use.
Takes into account existing insights, industry best practices, technical constraints and specific platform demands to recommend appropriate solutions.
Works with the Digital Creative team’s UX Research Lab to assist in gathering strategic insights, analyzing research and user testing results, guiding user-centered design methods and crafting industry-leading experiences from concept to execution.
Collaborates with designers, developers, writers, strategists, project managers, social media team members and stakeholders within Brand Strategy and Management, and from around the university, to plan, develop and execute projects.
Collaborates and works cross-functionally to ensure that cohesive solutions and consistent patterns are used across all digital products and platforms.
Works from high-level requirements and asks thoughtful questions to gather all relevant information to guide design direction.
Practices strong communication, presentation and analytical skills including the ability to communicate complex design concepts clearly and persuasively.
Takes responsibility for fostering culture and collaboration across teams, including the larger ASU community of subject matter experts working in shared spaces.
Updates tasks and project status in a project management system, Wrike.
Maintains file settings, structure and naming conventions used by all designers in a shared file system, Dropbox.
May supervise student workers.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Design (e.g. interaction, graphic, visual communications, product, industrial), HCI, CS related field AND three (3) years of industry experience OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in managing multiple projects, using design to advance progress by proposing solutions and showing collaborators what is possible before final content or images are delivered to the designer.
Experience designing for web CMS systems — Drupal is highly desirable.
Experience working with a project management team and within a project management system.
Experience creating animated/motion graphics.
Experience with video editing.
Experience with zeroheight or similar design system documentation tool.
Experience using and maintaining a digital design system or UI kit.
Experience working within a well-established brand.
Experience in interpreting messages into visual and metaphorical form.
Demonstrated knowledge of design expertise and experience working within an established brand. Portfolio of work should demonstrate strong formal typography and information hierarchy decision-making skills. Samples should focus on digital and UX work.
Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with, human-centered, insights-driven design process, applying a user-experience design approach to all projects.
Experience in understanding audience/users’ needs, motivations and behaviors and translate them into effective design solutions.
Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (especially XD, Illustrator and Photoshop).
Experience creating design assets for social media platforms.
Demonstrated knowledge of information architecture.
Demonstrated knowledge of photo manipulation, including the ability to silhouette images, retouch images, color correct images for digital use.
Demonstrated knowledge of design patterns.
Experience with testing and optimizing digital design deliverables and analyzing their performance.
Experience working in a collaborative team and working directly with developers and social media managers to ensure the successful implementation of a design.
Evidence in having a sharp eye for detail and highly developed organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks against tight deadlines.
An effective communicator and presenter with an aptitude for translating design ideas into visuals and speaking about their work to varied audiences.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting and using a laptop/keyboard/mouse.
May be required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
Requires the ability to communicate clearly to perform essential functions.
May require frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
Regular activities require the ability to quickly change focus.
