.AIGAAZ is kicking off Black Business Month with a series of spotlights featuring creatives in our own community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Black business owners account for about 10 percent of U.S. businesses and about 30 percent of all minority-owned businesses, totaling approximately two million companies owned by African Americans. AIGAAZ is all-inclusive and this month we are celebrating the diverse cultures that are right here in Arizona.

Our first spotlight is with Kameron Davis, Owner/Designer of PWR Design. We learned about his passions and even some challenges along the way to becoming the designer that he is today. Read on to meet Kameron:

Hi Kameron, tell us about how PWR Design came to be.

In 2014 I began designing flyers for organizations on my college campus. After graduation I got a job, but lost touch with my art. In 2018 I realized I was missing having art in my life. So that is how PWR Design began. I have no formal design background so I took to YouTube, spent hours practicing, and studying other designers. I began trying out different design disciplines until I found the style of design I enjoyed the most.

After some trial and error I landed on logo design because I love problem solving with clients to make their ideas come to life. That has been my focus for the past year, and I am now branching out into branding, merchandise, and packaging.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

The biggest challenge has been learning the ins and outs of graphic design as well as owning a business, while simultaneously working a 40 hour job. I’ve had to find time by waking up at 4:30 a.m. to get my design work done before going to work my day job.

“I am passionate about raising the level of design in the black business owner community, so that black businesses can compete alongside their counterparts in their industry.” – Kameron Davis, Owner/Designer of PWR Design

What have you found most rewarding about owning your own business?

The best thing is other people seeing the value in my art.  Being able to see the logos that I have designed on client’s websites, social media, and products is incredible. I also love that I have something that I own, that is beginning to flourish based on my knowledge and hard work.

What is something that you are passionate about in the community?

I am passionate about raising the level of design in the black business owner community, so that black businesses can compete alongside their counterparts in their industry. I feel that black businesses have been underserved and overlooked.
